Opportunity is now: Mark 14:3-7

“While he was in Bethany, reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head. Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, ‘Why this waste of perfume? It could have been sold for more than a year’s wages and the money given to the poor.’ And they rebuked her harshly. ‘Leave her alone,’ said Jesus. ‘Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them any time you want. But you will not always have me.’”
– Mark 14:3-7 (NIV)

In this story, a woman sees a rare, one-time opportunity to honor Jesus. She doesn’t hesitate or hold back; she seizes the moment with boldness and generosity, pouring out costly perfume. Others criticize her decision, seeing it as a waste. But Jesus defends her, recognizing her act as something beautiful and timely. This devotion challenges us to seize the unique opportunities God places before us, even if they may seem unconventional to others.

1. Recognize the Value of the Moment

The woman knew this was her chance to honor Jesus. She didn’t know what tomorrow held or if she’d have another opportunity, so she poured out everything she had. In our lives, God gives us unique opportunities that may not come again. These moments might be opportunities to serve, encourage, or show love in meaningful ways. When you recognize that each moment has value, you’re more likely to respond with the same passion and focus that this woman showed.

2. Don't Let Criticism Stop You

Not everyone understood what the woman was doing. They saw it as wasteful, but Jesus saw her heart and intention. Sometimes, others might question or criticize the steps you take to honor God or pursue a calling. But Jesus saw the woman’s act as beautiful, and He sees your heart, too. Don’t let the fear of criticism hold you back from doing what you feel God is calling you to do.

3. Take Action While You Can

Jesus told the onlookers, “You will not always have me.” The woman acted because she knew she might not have this chance again. Similarly, the opportunities God places in front of you won’t last forever. Whether it’s a chance to forgive, to lead, or to speak up, seize these moments with courage. Don’t wait for the “perfect time”—God often works through moments that seem unplanned.

Prayer for Seizing Opportunities

Lord, thank you for giving me opportunities to serve and honor you. Help me to recognize these moments, to respond with courage, and to trust in your purpose even when others may not understand. May I pour out my time, energy, and resources for you, knowing that each opportunity is a gift. Amen.

Like the woman with the alabaster jar, don’t hold back. When an opportunity comes to honor God or love others, seize it wholeheartedly. These moments, even the ones that seem small, are the ones that will make an eternal impact.
