Loyalty Matters: 2 Cor 7:3

"I do not say this to condemn you; for I have said before that you are in our hearts, to die together and to live together."
– 2 Corinthians 7:3 (NKJV)

In this verse, Paul writes with deep loyalty and love, expressing his commitment to the people he’s leading. He’s not only their leader, but he’s also in it with them for the long haul, through both highs and lows. This kind of loyalty—where you’re willing to “live and die” with someone—is exactly what makes a great teammate, friend, and leader. As an athlete, loyalty is a value that can transform your relationships, strengthen your team, and earn the trust of those around you.

1. Loyalty is Built on Commitment

Paul shows us that true loyalty comes from commitment. He’s not just around when things are easy or when his team is winning. He’s in their lives through every challenge, every loss, and every victory. Loyalty on your team looks the same: sticking by each other, even when things don’t go according to plan. When you stay loyal to your team, you’re building a bond that says, “I’m here for you no matter what.” This level of commitment doesn’t go unnoticed and becomes the foundation for a trust that lasts.

2. Loyalty Means Sacrificing for Others

Paul’s words here are serious: he’s willing to “live and die” with his people. He’s not just talking about physical life and death; he’s talking about being willing to make sacrifices for them. In your own life, loyalty might mean giving up some personal glory to help a teammate succeed or working extra hard so the team can reach a goal together. When you put others before yourself, you’re showing loyalty in action.

3. Loyalty Fosters Unity

A team that’s loyal to each other is unstoppable. When you know your teammates have your back, you play with more confidence and resilience. That kind of unity isn’t built overnight, but it grows with every act of loyalty you show. When the going gets tough, loyalty is what keeps a team bonded and moving forward together, no matter the circumstances.

4. Loyalty Starts in the Heart

Notice Paul’s words: “you are in our hearts.” Loyalty doesn’t start with what we do; it starts with how we feel about the people we’re with. When you genuinely care about your team, loyalty becomes natural. It’s about choosing to see the best in others, forgiving mistakes, and always remembering that you’re part of something bigger than yourself.

Prayer for Loyalty

Lord, thank you for showing me what true loyalty looks like. Help me be the kind of person who is there for others, who cares deeply and commits fully. Give me the strength to put my team before myself and to be there for them, both in victory and in defeat. Let my loyalty be a reflection of your love. Amen.

With God’s help, be the teammate who’s known for loyalty. Show up, stick with your team, and let loyalty shape how you compete and grow together.
